As we're all apparently in the mood for intellectual challenges (Are you serious? - Ed) Here's a crossword clue.

It's from The Times and it's cryptic.

No need to worry about copyright because we're doing this for review purposes.

Okay...

Clue.

General, in vain rules otherwise.

--------- (9 letters)

This is an easy one, a starter, if you will.

If that's too difficult for all you cunning linguists out there, I'll give you a couple of letters. Same clue...

U---E----

Answer when I sober up.

Hic...

Skoob.

Give the monkey a banana!

Spot on!

Next clue:

From The Times again. Strictly for critical purposes.

Island rejected agreement on fish (8 letters) (Sorry, had to edit.)

--------

Clue:

A----S--

If anybody needs these solutions explaining, ask JB or somebody. I'm as thick as fuck, me.

Budapest.

Correct!

Shoot = bud

Troublemaker = a pest

European City = Budapest!

Can't see this catching on though.

A bit like chess....

Ah well...

Got the other one yet?

I can't do the 'cryptics' these days. I'll stick with The New York Times crosswords...though I haven't advanced to INK yet.

For me, it has to be the Guardian X-words or the Indie's. In either case, my huge store of pop-cultural knowledge would help. It's a shame the Economist doesn't have one. It would bring up readership.

Bit behind on this.

Sorry. (Yeah, I know, don't be.)

Today's - from The Times again (not today's crossword - a Times Crossword book - No10 to be precise.)

Show gratitude about new kit replaced for advisory team

(5,4)

Easy one that.

Have fun.

I've got it - but I'm not sayin' what it is.

I mean Skoob's not Lynton's - the latter reads like one of the Isle of Wight Crossword clues.
