Three types of pangolins exist in Africathe giant pangolin, the tree pangolin and the most widespread, the ground pangolin. Pangolins have small heads and long, broad tails. They are toothless and have no external ears, although their hearing is good. Their sense of scent is well-developed, but their sight is poor. The weight of the protective keratinous scales and skin make up about 20% of the pangolin's weight. The animal preens itself by scratching with the hind legs, lifting its scales so the claws can reach the skin. It also uses its tongue to remove insects from under the scales.

I think there's a ground pangolin living in my garden shed.
It would explain a great deal... Regards Skoob ![]() |

I have a rare flying pangolin.
It lives in a tree in my garden. I know it's a pangolin because every morning, it says to me: "It's time to get up" And one morning I asked why it was time to get up, and it replied: "Because I'm a pangolin." I said: "But you're in a tree, and as everybody knows, Pangolins are not very good climbers." It replied: "I'm a rare flying pangolin, though strictly speaking I glide." After this I ate it, and it tasted a little like chicken. Iain |

I found a pangolin on my doorstep today, in a wicker basket. It was wrapped in sealskin and there was a note pinned to it saying:
"Please take me into your family and care for me. I am a pangolin. I am easy to look after. I eat anything and everything and am willing to do your bidding" Signed....Pangolin's parents - Amy and Duke P.S. He is a Ground Pangolin and does not fly. LG |

I once had a pet Pangolin named Brutus.
They eat aunts and we could never find Mom's sisters Hilda, Jenny and Gertrude after Brutus arrived! |

I must say, I stayed in SKOOBS shed the other night. (He allows me now and again) And this creature licked the boil on my bum. The next day, it was gone, I thought it was a rat.
Sorry about the soiled mattress SKOOB. Love as always Arm xxx |

Pangolin's.
Lovely creatures. Won't hear a bad word about them. Angels, they are. Nice to see a thread dedicated to them. |

I made one of Jesus Budda's animal traps (see mag section) in order to trap the one that lives in my shed with arm. (Once, at least.)
Don't know what I'll do with it if I catch it. Or maybe it's chew its own leg off and escape. Regards Skoob. |

You made the trap?
Good for you! You need to put it near the path the pangolin/Armfeetandtoe usually uses. IT WILL WORK. 100% guaranteed. And when you catch it/them I will describe how to bleed/skin/gut them. In detail. Lots of detail. PS: I am currently working on a new Instructional piece on making a shelter....which you could use to replace your old shed, Skoob. |

From what I understand they are just beaten senseless before being eaten if that's what you had in mind.
Sounds quite dreadful, apparently quite a few get seized at airport security.

Back to the airport security issue, the ones that remain calm and just say they are passing through don't get questioned or patted down as much.

a) Thanks for that informative update Victor; we appreciate the scale of your aardvark on the project.
b) I thought they were stringed instruments, somewhat like a lute. Perhaps if they were hollowed out. |

Erskin
If they were gutted and dried out I am sure they could be made into a serviceable lute or mandolin, there are the right shape and size. |

The physical appearance of pangolins is marked by large, hardened, plate-like scales. The scales, which are soft on newborn pangolins but harden as the animal matures, are made of keratin, the same material of which human fingernails and tetrapod claws are made. The pangolin is often compared to a walking pine cone or globe artichoke. It can curl up into a ball when threatened, with its overlapping scales acting as armour and its face tucked under its tail. The scales are razor-sharp, providing extra defence. The front claws are so long that they are unsuited for walking, and so the animal walks with its fore paws curled over to protect them. Pangolins can also emit a noxious smelling acid from glands near the anus, similar to the spray of a skunk. Pangolins have short legs, with sharp claws which they use for burrowing into termite and ant mounds, as well as climbing.
The tongues of pangolins are extremely elongated and extend into the abdominal cavity. By convergent evolution pangolins, the giant anteater, and the tube-lipped nectar bat, all have tongues which are unattached to their hyoid bone and extend past their pharynx deep into the thorax. In pangolins, the section of the brain that relates to problem solving is highly developed. Although their problem solving ability is primarily used to find food in obscure locations, when kept in captivity pangolins are remarkable escape artists and quite proficient at chess and Yahtzee. |

I am sure I just saw one just walking down our street. I went to take a photo to prove it but the battery was dead.

Pangolins are really, really lovely.
And that is rare for a non-fur covered creature. Keep it up, Victor........the pangolin coverage, that is. |
