Hello Monkey you mad bastard

I've been up all night. Drinking beer again. But I'm done now.

Watched Indiana Jones And The Crystal Skull or somesuch yesterday with my granddaughter with the surround sound cranked up.

Only 5 Monkeys for that one.

Had to endure a McDonald's after that. But at least Mrs Skoob and the little un (she's nearly as tall as me now and she'll break plenty of hearts as she gets older) brought some beer back.

Then later I watched a Brit 'thriller' - The Cottage, with Reece whatever his name is -Shearsmith - out of the League Of Gentlemen.

I was probably a bit too pissed to take it in, so I'll give that one four monkeys. Coz basically it was pretty crap.

On a positive note I have contributed to your footy violence thread.

Duncan sounds like a bit of a geezer.

Take care Thai guy

Skoob.

I thought I'd start this thread so that we could discuss films we'd seen that might be of interest to other readers.

Last night I watched In Bruges.

I thought it was well-written, touching, funny, sensitive and culturally-stimulating. Well, not so much the culturally-stimulating bit.

I think most films that have a funny Cockney-wanker-type hard man character in them are funny, and tend to make a serious, not to say, horrific subject, rather more light-hearted.

The Irish humour reminded me of Fergus McCarthy, although I have never met Fergus, so I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I am often left wondering 'Why?' when I watch films, and it was the same here when Ken, the older hitman, was shot by his boss Harry near the end, and then decided to jump from the clock tower to alert, and save the life of, his younger friend, Ray. Why couldn't they have all escaped, or, better still, decided to agree that it wasn't worth killing each other, and gone to the countryside for a picnic? If they had taken my advice, they could have made In Bruges 2, or used a different exotic European location, such as In Torremolinos or In Dusseldorf.

Despite this, my rating for this film was 9 Monkeys.

That is like stars, but using Monkeys instead.

Have you got any films you want to talk about, you wankers?

I don't watch a lot of movies or TV, so I probably can't contribute much to this thread.

I did watch a movie a few years back I'd like to see again. Not predictable like "regular" films. Mulholland Drive directed by David Lynch. Cool movie.

Groundhog Day with Bill Murray and Andie McDowell is probably my favorite movie ever. It motivates me.

I'd like to see Frank Caliendo do a movie where he played all the characters.

'Train arriving in station'. Its just atrain pulling into the station. Early 20th century, silent, black & white. A good laugh. I'd give it 9.5 Monkeys. Deducted half point for lack of plot.

No point SFO, It'll end exactly the same way as the first time you watched it.

So does this one, even more so, in fact all the way through the film I kept getting the impression that I'd seen it before. I've watched it a couple of times now and I get the same feeling of Deja Vu every time.

The film, set in 1964, follows the story of Jimmy Cooper (Phil Daniels), a London Mod (one of a group of fashion-obsessed working-class youths who listen to African-American soul, Jamaican ska, and British beat music and R&B, take amphetamines and ride Vespa and Lambretta scooters).

Sounds a lot like half the alumni at the University of North Texas.

He might survive if he's crafty about it, if I was him I'd open a fast food drive through at the castle because people will always want a cheeseburger, with the right architect and structural engineer he should be able to design a reasonably impenetrable fortress whilst still allowing goods and produce to be brought in side in relative safety.

A few solar panels with shatterproof glass would run the lights and give ample amounts of hot water.

I doubt it.

You should try and get a copy of the film SF, it would help you understand tribalism and the football violence thread.

It's an age old thing and it's in the blood, Americans lost a bit of tribalism when they became America. American history only goes back a few hundred years and even way back then you had to stand together as one nation, no time for tribalism. From fighting the Indians out West to keeping an eye on the British back East.

A full time job.

That's why Jalapenoman thought the "Football violence thread was actually about the Football. Even with strong Italian root's the gene has died within him. If society crumbles the likes of Jalapenoman will be ill equipped to survive once he runs out of ammo.

Still I suppose he could always get the young lad to knock up a bit of a castle for him maybe with a moate and draw bridge.

To comment on one of the listed above films:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a piece of crap. It is the worst of the series and should never have been made. Part of watching a movie is supposed to be "the willing suspension of disbelief" (as one person once put it). Well, this one just goes too far. It was the worst movie I saw during 2008.

The best movie I have seen this year is "Up." It is a sweet little cartoon that is very heartfelt and moving for adults but is also very entertaining for children. Pixar delivered another good movie with this one.

The best movie that I saw last year was "The Boy in the Stiped Pajamas." I thought that the woman who played the mother deserved an Academy Award, but she wasn't even nominated (not slutty enough, I guess).

Some of my favorite films of all time would include (and I am listing by category as I cannot come up with a "top ten" list):

War Movies:
Mister Roberts
The Great Escape
Tora Tora Tora
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Patton
Judgement at Nuremburg (though this could be considered a drama as it is actually post war)

Drama:
Dangerous Liasons
Lady Jane
The Sting
Butterflies are Free
How Green Was My Valley
Spartacus
Lawrence of Arabia
The Lion in Winter
Awakenings

Comedy:
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Princess Bride
Arsenic and Old Lace
The Court Jester
Foul Play
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Same Time Next Year
Space Cowboys (though this could also be considered drama)

Westerns:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Rooster Cogburn and the Lady
The Shootist
How the West Was Won

Sports:
The Natural
Field of Dreams
The Bad News Bears (original, not remake)
Brian's Song
The Longest Yard (original, not remake)

Animated:

Beauty and the Beast
Up
Enchanted
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Science Fiction:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Star Trek II; The Wrath of Khan
The Planet of the Apes (original, not remake)
Independence Day (I know it sucks, but I enjoy it)

Musicals:
The Man of La Mancha
Brigadoon
Paint Your Wagon
Annie
Evita (even though I despise Madonna)

Action/Adventure:
The Sean Connery James Bond films (He was the best in the role and Craig is the worst)
The first and third Indiana Jones films
The National Treasure movies (awful acting, but fun)
Sneakers
The Hunt for Red October

Rise Of The Foot Soldier is the only film I've seen to date that portrays soccer violence realistically. 'The Firm' with Gary Olman came pretty close.

Skoob,

You listed Superman II on your list. I think that was the last decent superhero movie ever made. They have gotten progressively worse over time, with The Dark Knight being one of the worst movies ever made.

It was unfortunate for me that my kids loved the genre and we had to go see them all. Now, however, I can live in the peace and quiet of never having to see that crap again!

Since Duncan listed his worst films, I'll list mine:

The worst big budget or popular films ever made:
The Dark Knight
Anything starring Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, or Jack Black (I don't think that they are funny or even mildly amusing)
The Silence of the Lambs
The Godfather Series (I hate the glorification of the criminal element)
Scarface
Steel Magnolias (take away Sally Field's performance and you've got nothing of substance left)
The Shawshank Redemption
The Simpsons Movie
Amazing Grace and Chuck (okay, it wasn't big budget, but it is still one of the worst ever)

Just musing over the worst big budget films J-Man...

Independence Day was truly cringeworthy. (sorry)

Waterworld with Kevin Costner was appalling.

The new batch of Star Wars prequels are mind numbingly tedious.

All the Harry Potter films are just vastly overrated.

Batman And Robin was just too ludicrous for words.

Heaven's Gate almost bankrupted the studio - it was that bad.

The 'Saw' series I just gave up on - too ludicrous for words.

Saturday Night Fever was a crock of shit, as was the sequel, Staying Alive. (Mrs Skoob The First Loved John Travolta - should maybe have told me something...)

I'll come back when I think of some more.

Regards

Skoob.

In answer to your question, no I haven't.

Aware that Mon Dieu plays beach soccer with brother Joel and that he lives in Barcelona because that's where his parents came from.

Any updates appreciated.

Mon Dieu really was Mon Dieu, alongside Denis and Georgie.

And Sir Robert.

Right up there with the very best.
