You posted this three minutes ago and it has already changed to Mark Lowton as featured writer.

Oh where is the justice?

In the old days, it was a supreme honor and you had to beat the women to keep them from attacking you in orgasmic fury. Today, three minutes and it's over.

Sounds like Skoob's love life....on a good day!

It must be a conspiracy!

The only other name that I have ever written under on this site was Professor Leakey. That was back in the days when Duncan was also Dr. Maxwell and Helium was MyHat2U.

Today, I sometimes use the name of Morse, but so does Buckwheatsbutt (we pass the name back and forth).

I like Prof. Leakey...even though it was before my time....if you can show me a birth certificate, I think you should be allowed to write under that name as well, again....especialy on topics of a sensitive, liberal like nature.....

and PS....stop passing me around....between you and Buck it isn't helping my ratings....but then of course, I haven't written anything for awhile....

Nah Capitan.

I've done about 700 stories since I joined in September last year. I just wouldn't have the time to write under other names. I work 4 days on and 4 days off. When I'm at work it's a long day, minimum of fourteen hours, max of 15 hours. Including commute time.

When I first surfaced here, some people thought I was Mrs Kensington, or another writer named Bookseller. But the truth is, I was neither.

I've explained all this before.

I only ever write on here as Skoob1999.

I've got two weeks off now.

Toying with the idea of spending a few days in France.

Paris is nice, but I've also had St Malo recommended.

The ferries at Portsmouth are just down the road.

Take Care All,

Skoob.

Bureau,

Regarding the drought. The National Weather Agency is saying that it is the worst drought to hit Texas since the 1950's (60 years).

And here in San Antonio for the past 40 days we have had 100 plus temperatures.

It is strange to hear, but a lot of people down here are saying that we need a hurricane to bring some rain.

Of course we all have seen what Hurricane Ike did to Galveston last year.

Perhaps the governor can hire a Kickapoo rain dancer from Wisconsin.

Take care and keep up the good work.

Hasta Later,
Abel

JM:

I loved "G8 Summit Leaders Set Two Degree Global Warming Limit", relative to President Obama's order about opening doors and car windows, with air conditioners running to deal with warming.

I related this story to some of my more liberal friends and they just don't get it, both technically and politically!

Cheers,

Things could get a lot worse in your neck of the woods, but it should break within the next 2-3 years.

The reason is because the sun is approaching solar maximum.

The Sun has a magnetic field like the Earth, except it's incredibly strong. However, the Sun is not solid like the Earth, and flows like a liquid.

The sun also rotates like the Earth, but because it flows, its equator travels more quickly than it's poles. This results in the magnetic field of the sun twisting.

Much of the energy that wants to escape the Sun cannot because of its magnetic field. As it twists, however, breaks occur as it tries to realign itself, allowing bursts of energy to escape.

As time progresses, distortions in the field build up, and energetic bursts become more and more frequent, allowing the Sun's output to increase over time.

What this overall increase in solar output means for Texas is powerful storms fed by very warm, very moist Gulf air feeding up in the spring (I paid my way to San Francisco doing flood damage restoration work), but a longer summer with little chance of relief from cool blue Northerlies, as it's warmer up there now, too. However, warmer, moister Gulf air also means more energy to feed arriving tropical storms, your only hope for rain right now. Some of them could be monsters.

After a period of about 11 years, the magnetic field can take no more, and flip-flops - the North pole becomes the South, and vice versa.

This being the end of one-half of a 22 year cycle of polarity reversal, activity quiets down for a while and weather becomes a bit less extreme; but it starts to build again.

What's a little scary is that people in conservatively biased news media will use this quiet period as evidence global warming is just a myth.

That means 11 years after today, we might see storms much worse than the ones coming over the next 1-3 hurricane seasons (including this one).

P.S. Here's a related article, if anyone is interested. It's a bit dated (2006), but I used it anyway because it also talks about the oceans' conveyor system to which I refered in another posting aimed at U.K. readers.

We've been trying to tell you guys this for years.

It's always been: "No deal."

You consume too much energy and too many natural resources per capita.

I love America, and what it stands for.

But it took a dickhead like Al Gore to convince some people?

That really is taking the piss.

Skoob:

You got Al Gore right, he is a dickhead!

Where some of us in the USA differ with people on the other side of the pond and our stupid environmentalists is that one does not conserve one's way into energy independence.

Each year there are more people and new toys available, even though they are more efficent energy wise, they take added power.

New sources of clean/nuclear energy (lots of lip service by the left wing loons) have to be developed over periods of time. The pie in the sky overnight wet dreams of far left loons, that currently inhabit Washington DC, will lead to nothing.

Yes we consume more, but when the US economic engine works it drives the world. These far left loons are going to kill the golden goose.

Sorry about the Hyde park soapbox, but it gauls me when I see technology being legislated, not developed. Saving fish have become more important than people!

Hands Across The Ocean, peace.

Cheers,
Philbert

Morse,

Thank you for your kind words.

The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce should start scheduling parades on a daily basis so, as you stated, hopefully it rains on one of those random parades.

And of interest to our friend, mate, and amigo Skoob regarding that liquid beverage known as beer: Local beer distributors are all reporting record-breaking sales.

And San Francisco Onion, one point that you made that really stands out is that with the temperatures being very warm that means that the waters of the Gulf of Mexico are also very hot, and as everyone knows that is what feeds a hurricane.

And that warm water is what can easily take a category 2 hurricane like Ike, which devastated Galveston last September and turn it into a category 5, like Hurricane Camille which in 1969, slammed into the Gulfport-Biloxi (Mississippi) area with devastating winds of 190 mph.

So far it has been a very quite hurricane season, but I've seen times when all of a sudden three will pop up south of Cuba and set their sights on (as Sarah Palin calls 'em) "The Lower 48."

And echoing Skoob and Philbert of Macadamia, "Hands Across The Ocean."

Take care. And everyone keep up the excellent writing.

Hasta Later,
Abel

"Where some of us in the USA differ with people on the other side of the pond and our stupid environmentalists is that one does not conserve one's way into energy independence." - Once more. The Entropy Law. Learn it. Live it. When you burn fossil fuel, you are releasing stored solar energy in the form of heat. This is in addition to the solar energy already warming us every single day. If one does not conserve one's way into energy independence, one's species perishes.

Each year there are more people and new toys available, even though they are more efficent energy wise, they take added power - The economics of expansion, which is a redundancy.

New sources of clean/nuclear energy (lots of lip service by the left wing loons) have to be developed over periods of time. The pie in the sky overnight wet dreams of far left loons, that currently inhabit Washington DC, will lead to nothing. - Non-polluting fuel cells have been in use in NASA satellites since the '60's. They are not used in automobiles because of right wing loons that want us to use more oil so they can make money hand over fist at the expense of the entire species.

Yes we consume more, but when the US economic engine works it drives the world. These far left loons are going to kill the golden goose. - Economic THEORY is based strictly on expansion. Contraction is seen as bad. Nevertheless, contraction is inevitable, given our finite atmosphere. These far right loons are going to cook our geese, and every other species.

Sorry about the Hyde park soapbox, but it gauls me when I see technology being legislated, not developed. Saving fish have become more important than people! - Okay, possibly the first time for this one. The human body is an individual, true. But is inhabited by many different other organisms, including bacteria. If we are unable to fight off certain bacteria, we get fevers and diarrhea to burn and flush them out. If we cannot, we die. I'm for saving those bacteria, but those bacteria are us, and the Earth is a body. I'm not sure about the fish you mentioned - maybe those are analogous to head lice or something.

I am a scientist. I'm all in favor of developing technology. However, many human beings cannot be trusted to make the right decisions, so we must pass laws carefully, allowing freedom of technological development while still helping to avoid catastrophe.

That's the answer to saving the planet SFO.

Delete the human race and the planet will thrive, tree's, grasslands, wildlife, the oceans would teem again and the skies would be filled with migratory birds.

I'm doing my bit by using milk cartons and empty yoghurt pots to light the "Polish" coal in the grate, I leave the lights on all night, the television on standby and I never get the van serviced until it stops on the road.

In 10,000 years the only remnant of mans existence will be Mount Rushmore.

It's the only way.
