Dear Spoof,

This has the ring of authenticity about it. I could see Mrs Bridges doing that, although surely it would be a coal fire rather than a roaring log fire - though I am not one to gainsay the metaphorical power of roaring logs.

I must admit though that the roaring logs do bring images of a naked Oliver Reed to mind. Now I just know that I won't be able to sleep unless I neck a few Manhattans.

PS I've never worked it out: is it the logs or the fire that do the roaring? In my limited experience, it was always more a matter of smouldering coal fires and rooms full of smoke. That's why I lived for the cinema.

Just read your Coronavirus Letters to The Editor piece.

A joy from start to finish

The old clincher for me was the Eddie Cantor reference accompanied by his discography.

Inspired and inspiring

Re Log and coal fires. I remember Tom Brown of schooldays fame being roasted in front of one by Flashman as punishment for turning up 2 minutes late with his baked Murphy and there was a fair bit of roaring going on there I don't mind telling you!
