If she feels like he is male on that particular day, he binds his chest, wears trousers, and farts copiously over breakfast. Lesley and Leslie both state that they don't want to physically change their sexes, they just want to decide each day what's going to confuse the public the most, and be accepted and recognised for their choices.

That's probably about it, though I guess they would dispute the bit about wanting to confuse the public - but maybe that's it, maybe they want an identity or role within which to secrete (messy!) themselves...

I like the way she had them changing gender in the same sentence.
