image for Hawking Set For Indy 500

Car fanatic Stephen Hawking is entering this years Indeanapolis 500 race. The world famous race, where racers tear around a racetrack for 500 laps has become a classic and is watched by fans all over the world.

It's a high speed thrills and spills race that's not for the faint hearted.Past winners include Rod Stewart, George Formby and Simon Cowell.

It wasn't widely known that Hawking, 96, from Florida, was a racing enthusiast but it turns out not only does he love the 'Indy 500', he did a practise lap in his motorised wheelchair and was seventh fastest, so starts on the grid in and amongst the big boys.

Kenny Everett, who invented the race said, 'I was very impressed with his sideways technique and lovely smile.'
