image for Algeria Government Gives In To The Western Governments About Weekends

The government of Algeria has decided to change the weekend again to make it compatible with the weekend in the West. This means that Thursday and Friday will not be the weekend in Algeria anymore.

Instead Friday and Saturday will be the weekend just the same as it is in London and New York.

Why do the Algerian government do this?

"Algeria established the Thursday-Friday weekend in 1976 in what was seen as an assertion of Algeria's post-colonial identity as it tried to distinguish itself from the West" said a writer of the BBC called Mohammed Arezki Himeurbut.

Since the last 33 years Algerians have enjoyed going to the market on Thursday and going to prayers on Friday but now they will have to go to prayers on Friday and then go to market on Saturday. How confusing!

Banks shops and other things like medical or dental surgeries have always remained open on Thursday and closed on Friday and Saturday. The doctors and dentists will have to remember to go to work on the right days! Bizarre!

Public sector workers took three days off for the change of weekend. Laziness!

"Business people who deal with international markets or companies have long complained that the country has lost hundreds of millions of dollars each year because of the practice." (BBC)

But our Algerian people are the individuals and have the tradition of a different weekend to the West and we want to keep it like that!

Our government is weak.
