WASHINGTON. The Bush administration has a long wish list for the NATO summit to be held at the Emerald City in Istanbul, Turkey later this month. Persuading NATO allies to shoulder more of the military burden in Iraq and Afghanistan will follow close behind an even more urgent appeal for a heart for Vice President Dick Cheney and a brain for President George W. Bush. "We followed that little girl Dorothy all the way here to Oz," said Bush emphasizing all four syllables in the word 'Oz'. We had to leave our friend, the cowardly lion, at the Pentagon, but we are confident that NATO chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will give Dick a heart and me a brain.
"We heard that the NATO chief was some kind of wizard, so we came all the way down that yellow brick road," said Cheney as his jaw suddenly stiffened up with rust. After many long months, Bush had finally learned how to squirt the oilcan on his friend Cheney's jaw.
While a majority of world leaders think there is a good chance that Cheney will get a heart, few hold out any hope that Bush will be getting a brain any time soon. That would be a nearly impossible feat---even for the wonderful Wizard of Oz.
