The 7.7 earthquake that rocked northern Chile on Wednesday exposed an unusual rock formation in the ocean area 80 miles off the coastal mining city of Antofagasta.
Residents fleeing the area were alerted to the structure that seemed to mysteriously rise out of the water.
Marine biologists initially thought it was merely a corral island, but on closer examination the formation appears to be a collection of life-like replicas of Jesus.
Augusto Merlot of the Chilean Archaeological society was awed by the formations close resemblance to the enigmatic moai statues of Easter Island or Rapa Nui as it is called locally.
Devotees have flocked to a tiny village from where the formation is clearly visible. Maria Dolorosa said all the statues looked like they were weeping.
In Washington televangelist Pat Robertson warned that while earthquakes are God's retribution for homosexuality and abortion, "we must take comfort in God's message. He is talking to us".
Mr.Robertson said that God had appeared to him in a dream the night before, telling him he would soon receive a message.
When asked why God would have chosen this method to communicate with him and what was the message, Mr. Robertson replied "The Lord works in mysterious ways. It is not ours to question why".
