City of Dubai: His Majesty, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, The Ruler of Dubai, opened the new multi-million dollar Scuba School of Dubai, to all the fanfare and celebration normally associated with the opening of a new Palace.
The Sheikh, a well known scuba enthusiast, stated "I feel my people need this state-of-the-art diving school, far more than simple hospitals and roads. The art and beauty found swimming under water has to be experienced to be appreciated."
The construction of the vast multi-purpose tank, complete with submarine classrooms, has taken 2 years to build. Once the landscaping and reception area is completed, it is estimated the entire project will cost in the region of £479 million, nearly the equivalent of the sheikh's annual sock and underwear allowance.
Originally designed to be located next to the Albert Dock, Liverpool, negotiations fell through in July 2006. It was then relocated next to the fabulous Dubai Marina.
The School represents another jewel in the crown of the country's tourist industry.
