Indian diplomats in Dublin reacted furiously today after Dublin City Councillor Ciaron Kennedy apparently announced on RTE Television that Hindu's are to be banned from Dublin city centre citing excessive drunkenness and foul and abusive language as the contributing factors.
A spokesman for India's Ambassador to Ireland told reporters at India House in Foxrock Dublin 18, "The Ambassador will be protesting in the strongest terms to the Irish Government and also to Prime Minister Ahern about the blatant disrespect shown toward the people of India, we expect a full apology from Mr Kennedy and nothing short of his resignation will placate the Indian Government.
"I sincerely hope that Mr Ahern will give this most serious and distasteful matter his full attention before it damages relations between our two great nations any further."
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was told of the Ambassadors comments by reporters as he left to watch a hurling match in Croke park today and was asked if the Government would be apologising to the Indian people.
Mr Ahern was clearly flustered, replied as he left his Drumcondra home, "Apologise? What de bleedin hell for? What has it got to do with India?
"If Dublin County Council want to ban Hindu's from the city centre den dat's dere decision and I wont be stopping dem.
"It's not safe to walk the streets of Temple Bar at the weekends, ban the Hindu's is what I say!
"And de Stag night's or Bucks nights or whatever you call dem. Going round with an L plate taped to dere arses an shrinkwrapping people to lampposts in de nip! Feckin childish!
"Now c'mon, let me in de car, I'll be late for de match"
