The well-known 84-year old veteran of Israeli politics Shimon Peres has been elected today as the 9th president of Israel, after winning a vote in the Knesset (parliament of Israel) and defeating the two other contestants by a great advantage (51-38-21).
The vote was been made following the resignation of ex-president Moshe Katzav, who was forced to resign by a court after being accused of doing not-very-nice things to his female co-workers.
"I did not expect to receive such honor." Said the new president Peres. "It caught me by absolute surprise. I didn't even know that I was a candidate for presidency."
His speech after receiving his new job was accompanied with good humor.
"The women at my new office shouldn't worry. Unlike Katzav, I'm too old for that. Hehe."
The responses of the Knesset members to his election were various. But they all agreed that "At least now, for the first time since 1959, he's finally out of our politics."
For those unfamiliar with the form of government in Israel, I will only mention that the President in Israel has quite about the same amount of political power the queen of England has.
