Two men were being questioned last night after police received reports of racial harassment against a dolphin which has become a local tourist attraction off the coast of Kent.
The pair, aged 25 and 26, were arrested on suspicion of cruelty after Dave the dolphin reported to coastguards that he had been subjected to a torrent of racist abuse using words such as "bottlenose" and "hammerhead".
It followed several 999 calls from Dave's concerned friends, a pair of turtles and a porpoise, who have been seen swimming in waters off Sandgate, Folkestone, for more than a year.
Kent Police's Marine Unit arrested the men who were videoed by shocked marine biologists using the "b" word and the " h" word.
A sobbing Dave commented today: "They wouldn't use that language to a Shark or a Killer Whale, would they?"
Kent Police said in a statement, "We just thought that f***ing limpet-covered fishy tw*t was on the blower again whining about the lack of cod, but when we heard that the "b" and "h" word had been used, we were horrified."
