image for Tibetans Face Down Scorn of Chinese in Close World Cup Match
Just a blessing?

In world cup action today the Dalai Lama started the match by blessing the game ball. The move was protested by the Chinese National team which does not recognize the Dalai Lama or the right of Tibetans to have autonomy.

"All I said to the soccer ball basically," said the Dalai Lama with a gleam in his eye, "was to have a nice day and bring goodness to all who touch you. Our friends from China have nothing to fear."

Except that the Tibetan team, made up of several exiled Tibetan athletes who have been training for multiple years, did not come to be friends with anyone, they came to win, "We know we can't win the World Cup, but we are out to earn the respect of every team we get the chance to play."

After losing to Tibet in a relative blowout 3-0, the Chinese team looked pretty glum. "We we could out play them most days, said You Jaeng a Chinese forward, "but they had some magic on their side today, we are honored to play a team so devoted to playing within themselves."
