Rome - - The Italian Scare Force was out in numbers today as the dulcet strains of an adapted Dr Hook & The Medicine Show 1972 smash hit were heard resonating from a giant UFO mothership over the Roman skyline at dawn.
The flypast coincided with embattled Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi's final curtain call which Italian Heir Defence sources were at pains to deny had anything to do with the collapse of his 'slave labor' alien currency project.
But as residents of the Eternal City stirred from their slumbers the Dr Hook single was impossible to drown out as the unmistakeable UFO's lyrics bid the leader farewell:
Sylvio's mother says Sylvio's busy, too busy to come to the phone/
Sylvio's mother says Sylvio's trying, to start a new life of his own/
Sylvio's mother says Sylvio's happy, so why don't you leave him alone?/And the operator says Forty Winks more, for the next three minutes...
The deafening song was heard drowning out Matins in the Vatican where the Pope's aides immediately telephoned the head of the Carabineri, complaining about the chorus with its 'slave labor' connotations:
Please Mrs Slavery I just gotta talk to him/I'll only keep him a while/Please Mrs Slavery I just wanna tell him/Goodbye...
By early morning Rome's Catatonia Airport was on emergency standby as worried travelers demanded to know the meaning of another verse being ghetto-blasted by the rogue mothercraft:
Sylvio's mother says Sylvio's packing, he's gonna be leaving today/
Sylvio's mother says Sylvio's suing, a 'Fraulien' down Bundestag-Way/ Sylvio's mother says please don't say nothing, to make him start crying and stay/And the operator says Forty Winks more, for the next three minutes
The ensuing pandemonium eventually resulted in Italian President Giorgio Napolitano issuing his own statement on Berlusconi's departure which UFO watchers claimed was a thinly disguised repetition of the Dr Hook song's last verse:
Sylvio's mother says Sylvio's hurrying, he's catching the nine o'clock train/Sylvio's mother says take your poison-tip umbrella, cause Sylvio is showing the strain/And Sylvio's mother says thank you for calling and slur won't be coming back again/And the operator says Forty Winks more, for the next three minutes...
The next anticipated UFO flypast anthem in the Eurozone debacle has been confidently predicted to the musical theme from 'The Third Man' and/or 'Zorba The Greek' over Athens next Tuesday.
