image for Avian Ecologists Challenge Green Energy Advocates

Sacramento CA: Large wind farms in the Golden State employ upwards of 5,000 wind turbines to generate green electricity. These turbines have been killing federally protected raptors (hawks and eagles), as the birds fly into the windmill blades and are chewed up.

Avian ecologists took their case to President Obama who heard both sides of the issue, asking the US Department of Energy (DOE) to help resolve the bird-strike problem while maintaining green energy generation. USDOE assigned a team headed by a PHD in Zoology to investigate potential solutions.

Since birds navigate utilizing planet Earth's magnetic field, a taxpayer funded high intensity magnetic field generator was built to safely direct the birds around the wind farm. Unfortunately, in order to cover the designated area the entire power output of the 5,000 wind turbines was required!
