There were just a few reporters this morning at the Republican congressional caucus as very little news was expected out of the meeting. Mostly, it was to be an award presentation from the Tea Party caucus to all GOP Senators and Congressman. Everyone was in an upbeat mood as the presentation began.
The media was mostly text messaging and looking at their Blackberries when Congressman Paul Ryan took the podium to make the presentations on behalf of the Tea Party caucus. The journalists could see the several hundred small boxes from Tiffany's on the podium. Everyone strained to see the contents as the first presentation was made. When the awards were all given, a reporter asked Congressman Ryan if he could see the chain and silver medallion with the large bird hanging on it. "It's the American Eagle," said Ryan. "Beautiful isn't it?"
The reporter from the Washington Post looked at the medallion and onlookers said his eyes grew wide. He looked at Ryan and said, "Congressman, this is not the American Eagle! It is an Albatross!"
As the journalists laughed and smirked, the entire GOP caucus was, at first stunned into silence. Many were throwing their medallions and chains on to the floor while several ranking members huddled, cursed, and looked at Ryan. No one had an explanation for the terrible mistake.
The Capitol news media looked on as the caucus exited the room and only one member was left sitting in his seat. John Boehner was alone, sobbing, his hands on his face, and mumbling, "I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! Why me Lord?!"
In related news, President Obama was heard to say when informed of the fracas at the awards ceremony, "I wondered how long it would take for them to start flipping each other the bird!"
