The American press is loudly calling for the release of jailed free speech activist and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo while at the same time calling for the jailing of Wikileaks founder and free speech activist Julian Assange.
Xiaobo and Assange have acted to bring transparency to secretive governments in an effort to make the regimes more democratic and empower ordinary citizens. The American media often assists the United States government and the powerful moneyed interests that run it to advance its agenda of enriching the few at the cost of impoverishing the many.
In a comic juxtaposition to the Wikileaks controversy it has been announced by UNESCO that The United States will play host to World Press Freedom Day in 2011.
In other media related news the American Media Establishment in aggregate has been awarded the Nobel Irony Award.
