Privatize Prisons, Out of Sight, Out of Mind

CCA, Corrections Corporation of America, a private corporation that oversees, and is responsible for the health and well being of some 75,000 prisoners across America, has been accused of negligent care and irresponsible conduct.

One of the prisons CCA runs in Idaho is so violent it has been deemed, "Gladiator School", the conditions inside the detention facility are so abhorred it is less prison and more gulag.

Prisoners allege, guards withhold or refuse medical care until they get information regarding other prisoners activities.

One incident that was caught on security video clearly shows one inmate being beaten so severely he ended up with brain damage. Guards stood idly by as the inmate was beaten by a wiry, slight assailant. They watched the beating for so long the attacker had to take a break to rest before he resumed brutalizing the unconscious man.

Three minutes after the attack the guards opened the metal door and handcuffed the assailiant. The man that was stomped in the incident bled inside his brain and was comatose for 3 days.

The Associated Press has obtained video footage showing officers watching the beating for several minutes. They were clearly spectating.

"We're highly disappointed and deeply concerned" over AP's decision to release the videos. "Public release of the video poses an unnecessary security risk to our staff, the inmates entrusted to our care, and ultimately to the public," a CCA rep. said in a statement.

CCA is involved in a number of lawsuits as you might imagine. Cases range, from guards allegedly sexually assaulting illegal immigrants waiting for extradition, to
making employees submit to sexual favors to maintain their jobs.

The prisoner beaten in this incident ended up with brain damage and has the intelligence of a 12 of 13 year old. He also has sustained short term memory loss.

This particular beating started when gang members demanded $5 a month rent from the victim. He told guards about the demands and was briefly put in isolation for protection. For reasons unknown, personal entertainment I'd guess, the guards put him back into the same unit where he originally with the same gang members, he was brutalized 6 minutes later.

With the way these contracts are given by the government, I would not be surprised if the next contract awarded CCA would be running kindergartens and grade schools.

I know this is not funny, it is real, I felt it needed to be passed along to anyone interested.
