Wendesday- The Supreme Court took on a case concerning religion today. This is surprising after the refusal of the intresting case last year concerning atheist vs. pledge of allegiances "under god."
Justice Scalia was surprisingly surprised to hear that they were accepting this case. "I don't see why the one is good and the other is bad," he said. (From ABC news)
Other Justices were mixed on the decision. While some felt the reason they accepted this case over the "under God" case is that this one had a less controversial question. "Who cares about the 10 commandments? "asks Justice (I can't say at fear of libel) "What we really need to worry about is changing an American song, something that shows our Patriotism and our unity for our country. We can not let the important events stand in our ways of making the known excistence of the S.C smaller."
Religious groups are worried by this announcement. They hailed the rejection of last year's religious case as a victory, and hoped for another one this time. For educated non-believers though, this could spell the end to one of the two groups.
Other groups stayed to cover the news and remained slightly more ambiguous on their oppinion; sharing it in only a slightly biased way to their nation-wide audience.
This Supreme court is expected to lose many of it's members. While unfortunately this includes many liberal justices, twisting the scale of justice toward conservativism. Then, it is likely to become even more of a passive court than it is already. This could lead to an imbalance of power leading to polyarchy- govt. run by many and oppresing the just and Democratic views. Let us hope, for the love of God, that this never happens.
Other topics that the Supreme court would probably reject include Religion in courts, Support of Religion in Public Places, and Religious Sponsorship. It should be noted that the supreme court itself houses a copy of the ten commandments, thereby becoming disputable in it's own merit.
Justice Kennedy is not in the mood to hear this case because of the evils of religion and the following harrasment it will bring him.
