Lee Peterson, the father of Scott Peterson on trial for murder, says he is currently living a nightmare. While giving testimony Lee Peterson admitted that he had given Scott $30 000 to put down on a house for Laci. In hindsight he believes that Scott may have believed that his father had given him $30 000 to have Laci put down at the house : "I mean that is as close as damn it that anyone could have mistaken it".
Lee Peterson says that what has made him start to believe that this whole terrible incident was a mistake, was when he remembered giving Scott another $30 000 for a country club for him and Laci.
"The very next day we were very fortunate to be driving in the country or we would not have been in time to see Scott in a field, armed with a club and chasing after Laci. Had we not happened along, Peterson informed the court, who knows what he would have done with that club?"
Lee Peterson was clearly shaken as he took the court through these incidents. It was obvious to those there that he felt a certain amount of guilt for failing to explain the money's purpose to a man who, let's face it, sold fertiliser.
The trial took a strange twist in the late afternoon session. Prosecutors to this point had denied that Laci could have been abducted while walking the dog. They claimed her pregancy made her too weak to be out walking. This was the theory that the defense had put forward to explain the disappearence of Laci.
The parties may now be coming together, in light of Lee Peterson's testimony regarding his son's inability to grasp certain concepts. When Scott said he believed Laci may have been abducted while out walking the dog what he might have meant is that she was slaughtered before or during a boat trip.
There is just such a fine line between those two propositions that one wonders why the trial has taken four months.
If one takes another disputed issue namely angling and puts it through the Lee Peterson method of splitting hairs, once again the solution is simple. The prosecution claim Scott Peterson is not the fanatical angler he would have us believe but used angling as a means to cover dumping the body.
Lee Peterson says that the only way he could get Scott to even look at golf was to let him fish at a creek on the course. Which means that Scott was next to the water watching how golfers made their holes.
How far removed is that from Scott making holes near the water, as he'd done so many times before, and then taking Laci out for a ride?
Lee Peterson has unlocked the door to the mind of Scott Peterson. The jury must lock the door to the rest of of him.
