CHICAGO - After not speaking to each other for 12 years Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield were brought together by none other than the world's richest woman Oprah Winfrey.
The two boxers had last seen each other during their championship bout in Las Vegas in 1997, when in the third round Tyson suddenly bit off part of Evander Holyfield's ear.
Oprah, who made sure that Tyson had eaten before his appearance on her show said that she was thrilled to bring the two ex-boxing greats together.
She said that she remembers being at The MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas back one June 28, 1997, and watching as Mike Tyson suddenly reached up and bit Holyfield on his ear, actually biting off a piece of his ear.
Miss O recalls turning to her main man Stedman and asking if biting was allowed in boxing. She says that he told her that it was not allowed unless one of the fighters refused to break their clinch right away once the referee instructed them to do so.
Mike Tyson came out first and he showed Oprah his spiderman facial tattoo. She remarked that it looked like something that you would see in the African countries of Kenya or Zimbabwe.
Oprah asked Tyson what in the world the tattoo represented. Tyson, who at times is hard as heck to understand due to a prevalent lisp, said that the tattoo is the Malawian symbol for ear aches.
Tyson said that he got it in honor of his boxing nemesis Holyfied. When asked how much it cost, Tyson said that he would rather not say. Oprah picked up her cell phone and made a call to her fellow talk show host Larry King.
She asked Larry how much Mike Tyson had paid for his facial tattoo. Larry told her that Mike had paid $900 for his one-of-a-kind limited edition tattoo.
When Oprah told Tyson that Larry had said that he paid $900 for his tattoo, Tyson grimaced and said that Larry was right on the money. Mike then remarked to Oprah that Larry King is a scary man, a very scary man.
Evander Holyfield was introduced and he came out wearing a suit and tie and a football helmet. Oprah laughed and Tyson asked him what was with the helmet.
Holyfield said that once his manager, his lawyer, and his grandmother heard that he was going to be on the Oprah Winfrey Show and appearing with Mike Tyson they all insisted that he wear the helmet.
Holyfield said that his grandmother even suggested that he may want to consider wearing a cup.
SIDENOTE: Evander Holyfield told Oprah that he has just finished writing a book about the whole championship bout ear biting incident. The book is titled, The Ear Sound Bite Heard 'Round The World.
