The fashion industry is in turmoil following a designer's admission that he introduced the current trend of Harem Pants as a joke. The pants, which have a baggy seat, a dropped crutch and tight, shin-length legs have been seen on catwalks and in fashion magazines all over the world in the last few months.
The designer said he was confessing to the joke now because it had got out of hand after other designers had started producing their own versions and the stores were filling up with the ridiculous style.
"What a bunch of sheep!", he said, "Did people really believe that a design that makes you look like you're wearing a diaper and have soiled yourself was the latest thing?"
As the news broke, other design houses tried to imply that they had realized the design was a joke, but had gone along with it. However, the designer dismissed the idea saying, "They didn't know. Their Spring Collections are full of the damned things."
We spoke to several shoppers who were buying Harem Pants in a well-known fashion outlet downtown and told them about the joke claim.
"I'm really pissed", said one woman, "These pants cost me $130 and now you're telling me they're fake?"
When we explained they were real but he had made them as a joke the woman visibly relaxed, "Oh that's OK, as long as they're not fake", she said.
Meanwhile, the designer explained how he had come up with the joke pants' look. "It was inspired by two things really," he said, "Penguins and MC Hammer."
Yesterday, in stores all over the country, Harem Pants were being sold in even greater numbers as the publicity from the revelation fuelled sales.
"I can't understand these idiots", said the designer when we spoke to him this morning, "Don't they realize how stupid they look? The pants are just a joke!"
