While practicing for a Memorial Day speech and at the same time cooking hamburgers on a outdoor grill at Camp David, President George W. Bush set a US flag on fire.
According to sources at Camp David, a declaiming President Bush, "thinking he'd grabbed a spatula, actually picked up a small flag and when he attempted to flip a burger with it, the flag caught fire."
President Bush, who has pushed for a Constitutional Amendment which would neuter anyone caught burning an American flag, apparently laughed off the incident and waved the burning flag over his head saying repeatedly: "Tiananmen Square, Tiananmen Square!"
Asked about it later Bush Administration Wari Leuter denied the incident happened, scolding reporters, "Under the Patriot Act that would be a crime, and your president is not a crook."
Ironically, the proper, and legal, way to dispose of a worn or tattered flag is burning.
