WASHINGTON (FMLiveWire) - John McCain and Sarah Palin have been admitted to a clinic for the treatment of their sex addiction.
"They haven't been able to keep their hands off each other since he named her his running mate," said an anonymous senior official in the Republican National Committee.
Their sad situation is similar to the unfortunate case of life imitating art in which actor David Duchovny was also just admitted to a rehab clinic for sex addiction.
The married American actor who plays a sex-obsessed womaniser on the Californication series has confirmed he is receiving treatment.
McCain and Palin said that they signed themselves into the Washington treatment facility voluntarily, stating, "We ask for respect and privacy for our spouses and children as we deal with this situation as a family."
Actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Douglas, Pamela Anderson, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, the Bush family, Karl Rove, Bill Clinton, the former husband of actress Angelina Jolie, and stand-up comedian Russell Brand have also received treatment for the condition.
The condition is thus not new, and clinics, support groups and websites are at long last publicly addressing it widely.
According to Phillip Puddenda, a fellow with the American Association for Counseling and GOP Sex Therapy, disagreement remains over whether it could be classed as addiction.
"There's a battle within the therapy world between the pros and antis," he said. "You've got psychiatrists on the one hand who like labeling conditions as medical, because then they can treat them. But it's equally true that this behavior that causes distress to self and others is similar to heroin, cocaine or tobacco addiction."
There are no hard statistics to measure the full extent of the problem, though experts have said it is more visible among Republican males who are more likely to pay for sex or visit porn websites, but as many as one in three sex addicts are believed to be Republican women.
The condition is due to an unnaturally high libido which impinges on the addict's everyday life, placing great strain on relationships, and in some cases making it difficult to function as a normal prudent and moral Republican.
Among the behavior traits that are common among GOP addicts are the need to keep secrets about sexual activities from loved ones; the drive to have sex in public places like the Washington Monument with people they would not normally choose; looking for sexually arousing articles or scenes in Republican newspapers, magazines and the need to increase the variety and frequency of sexual and romantic activities than previously to bring the same levels of excitement and relief.
This behavior is invariably accompanied by feelings of personal shame at the addict's behavior, leading to feelings of hopelessness and alienation.
McCain and Palin are expected to be fully treated from their ailment and to be released in time for the November election.
