Atlantic City, Nj/Newark Star Ledger - This New Jersey seaside and gambling resort suffered yet another blow to its image when Mayor Robert Levy was convicted of inflating his Army Service Record and claiming disability payments.
Dubbed "The Missing Mayor", Levy dropped out of sight two weeks ago, but then later emerged from a psychiatric clinic where he had been treated for undisclosed physical and mental problems.
The city, long under a cloud involving bribery, extortion, and blackmail, including filmed sex tapes of councilmen, seemed to shrug off this latest ethical hit, and were rushing to appoint yet another mayor.
Levy, a 20 year Army Veteran did serve 20 years in the military and two tours in VN, but his claims of being a Green Beret, surviving several combat jumps, spending long weeks in the jungle on his own, and serving in a clandestine intelligence unit with a sensitive intelligence gathering mission could not be confirmed. A former intelligence officer, identified only as "Boom-Boom", in classified documents, who served in several of the teams listed by Levy, said the Mayor was never there, even though most of the guys in the unit WERE "really crazy".
Sentencing of the mayor included repayment of $25,000 in disproved medical payments, 3 years probation and a $500 fine.
The VA says similar investigations continue including the circumstances surrounding the awarding of a Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge (now known as Infantryperson's) (CIB), and Hazardous Duty Pay awarded to Senator Hillary Clinton, (D. NY), for her service in Bosnia, and her 2nd runner up position for the Nobel Peace Prize for her negotiation skills in Ireland during "The Troubles".
