image for Leonid Meteor Shower Alarms Civil Defense Officials

Washington (IP) - The United States Civil Defense Agency has ordered cities across America to activate the anti-meteorite shield system.

Meteorites are expected to rain down with a frequency of 550 meteorites per minute during the upcoming peak of the the Leonid meteor shower.

The International Space Station has activated its anti-meteor shutter system and the astronauts on board are safe.

The prices of meteorites on eBay are way down due to the glut of the space rocks around this time of the year. First there were the Perseids in August and then a couple of minor showers and now the Leonid shower. Many meteor collectors simply put out buckets full of water around this time of the year and by the next morning the buckets are just full of meteorites. This abundance of meteorites forces prices down and some sellers are holding back on meteorite sales until after January when the frequency of meteor showers tapers off for a few months.
