Topeka KS: Helen Nickerson was excited about the birth of her new baby. She and her husband Todd Nickerson have tried for years to have a baby with no luck. The help of a fertility clinic allowed their dreams to come true.
Helen was strong of heart but weak in health by the time she entered labor. She was suffering through much pain when Dr. Alex Comings decided to anestisize her completely. The birth, according to Dr. Comings was a difficult one, but successful in all ways.
When Helen awoke 4 hours later, her husband Todd approached her bed with the 'newborn' wrapped in a pink blanket. Before handing her their new daugher, he told his still heavily drugged wife that the birth was very difficult and there were some problems that they can work together on. Todd, known as a a practical joker, had actually wrapped a stuffed baby alligator in the blanket and presented this as the new baby. When he handed Helen her new daughter, she lifted the blanket, saw the alligator, screamed and suffered a stroke which caused the current coma outcome.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Liken, the parents of Helen are now trying to take the the husband to court. Their attorney, Mr. Steven Tadous is not sure how to actually proceed. He stated that a case against Todd for 'scaring his wife into a coma' was one not ever filed. Mr. Tadous also stated he was checking with the County Attorney to see if there presidence of criminal charges for 'scaring a human being'
Meanwhile, Todd has sheltered himself in his home. He has not reported to work and will not answer the phone. Helen's parents have taken the newborn baby girl home with them and are working on taking custody of the child until Helen recovers.
