Inhalant abuse among the affluent in America is reportedly soaring as the price of gasoline continues to rise to new levels. Cocaine had long been the drug of choice among those with more money than brains. That, however, is changing, as drug users are turning in droves from snorting coke to huffing gasoline, particularly premium unleaded, which is priced at over four dollars per gallon in many places across the country.
Despite the fact that huffing gasoline is a very stupid and dangerous thing to do, people do it anyway, knowing that the end result is, if not death, then certainly brain injury and other neurological damage.
"People do a lot of stupid things just for acceptance", says psychologist Norbert Huffington. "They know it is dangerous but they do it anyway. What a bunch of dorks."
