ATLANTIC CITY, NJ -- Police said they arrested and charged two students Friday in an attack on an Atlantic City High School over a dollar.
Officials said a math teacher, who could not be identified because of potential threats had two broken bones in his neck and urinated on himself after the attack.
"You could hear it break. You could hear when he fell on the ground and you can smell the piss," said a student who saw the incident.
School officials said the teacher had taken a dollar from a student during class, and after class, two students, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old black boy, were waiting in the gym for him. One student pushed him and another threw a punch the started repeating pushing him, police said.
"He fell ... on his face. After that, they turned him over and there was all this blood- I was like damn," Reid said.
"I've been told that there's been serious paralysis involved, a broken neck is a serious injury," said Oscar Torres, school principal.
The attackers fled the scene, but police later took a ninth-grader and an eleventh-grader into custody.
They were charged Friday with aggravated assault, simple assault, attempted murder, and reckless endangerment, police said. A determination has yet to be made on whether the arrested students would face the life without parole or the death penalty.
School officials said the ninth-grader had previously been expelled and was up for expulsion again due to disruptive behavior.
Despite what happened the teacher was beyond his control, and was apparently the one apologizing.
"You know what he said? 'There goes my 100-percent attendance.' That's what he said because he never misses a day," according to students. "... He called back to let me know how he was doing and that he'll be back soon", said one teacher.
Some students said the teacher deserved it and that he was a former member of the Egg Harbor Township based Ku Klux Klan.
"I could believe it was him because he was just an ass and was very disrespectful to blacks," said one girl.
