Students at Ponce de Leon High School want to change the school's nickname from the Lions to the Potheads.

DENVER - National Focus Magazine is reporting that the student body at Denver's Ponce de Leon High School has voted to change the schools nickname from the Lions to the Potheads.

According to Durango Tucker with NFM, the student body vote came out to 1,929 for and 117 against.

The school's principal Florian "Sparky" Sparkafelli, 42, told the news media that although he does not care for the new name he would agree to go along with the decision of the majority.

He noted that many of the parents are furious with his stand on the matter and have vowed to take their children out of Ponce de Leon and either transfer them to nearby Lady Bird Johnson High School or else home school them.

An inside source said that the Ponce de Leon cheerleaders are already working on cheers using the name Potheads.

SIDENOTE: The matter will now go to the Rocky Mountain State Board of Higher Education where a final decision will be rendered within two weeks.
