The world was shocked and mostly outraged today when a North Carolina pastor and recently converted Evangelical Christian was elected Pope by the College of Cardinals at the Vatican.
The Reverend T. J. McCorkle of Louisburg, North Carolina, is a recent convert to Catholicism. He was formerly the pastor of a small Evangelical church whose congregation numbered less than thirty members and consisted mostly of relatives of McCorkle.
He was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI just this past month. No reason was given for the decision.
The Italian newspaper La Republica reports that McCorkle was mostly shunned by his fellow Cardinals when he arrived at the Vatican this past week. Evidently this did not stop his election to the highest position in the Catholic Church.
La Republica states that a Vatican spokesman speaking on condition of anonymity states that evidently Cardinal McCorkle arrived at the gathering of the Cardinals with a dossier on every Cardinal in attendance.
Each dossier included allegations, arrest record and payments by the Church to alter boys, fellow seminarians and Cub Scout troupes. The title of each dossier---Boys Life.
McCorkle's election was swift and with an overwhelming majority reports La RePublica. When Cardinal Carlo Menotti of Milan was asked by a journalist to explain the confounding and astonishing result, he replied---"The sheep-a, they don't-a talk-a!"
