WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Obama, 51, has advised Congress that he wants them to put getting rid of the United States penny on the frontburner.
The president speaking to a group of unemployed windshield wiper auto workers visiting the White House from Saginaw, Michigan, took some time to make a call to the speaker of the house John Boehner, 63, and gave him the message first hand.
President Obama put his two cents in and stressed the fact that a research study that was spearheaded by Vice-President Joe Biden found that due to inflation it now costs the U.S. government 1.2 cents to make each penny.
The president said that simple arithmetic will tell you that it is costing the American tax payers six cents to make five pennies.
He further noted that to make 10 million pennies worth $100,000, it costs the government $120,000.
