The Wisconsin Badgers took on the Stanford Cardinals in the 99th Rose Bowl game in Pasadena California New Years day. Stanford took the glory with a final score 2-12. This defeat makes the Badgers, three time losers in as many years.
While some were upset by Wisconsin being beaten by Stanford, others had another reason to be seeing red.
As disappointed as the Badger fans were, it was nothing compared to the negative backlash a marching band member received for wearing a pro marijuana tee shirt on television during the halftime proceedings.
Mary Figurora a mother of two teen boys called in to complain to the network broadcasting the game.
"Well, we were watching the Rose Bowl Stanford marching band show and much to my horror the camera singled out one of the drummers and you could see a big rainbow colored marijuana leaf on his chest and under it it said, "Legalize It", and they kept cutting back to him during the performance on the field, now what kind of message does that send to my 2 impressionable boys???"
When contacted network executives denied any intent by them to promote the use of drugs or alcohol by teenagers. "It was coincidence the band member was wearing a unorthodox shirt during the festivities."
A network representative went on to say, "The network was covering the event and he just happened to be playing an instrument on the field".
Old rednecks and war veterans in bars across America were shocked by the outlandish shirt. Their general consensus was it was a slap in the face of America to wear a chicken head Mohawk cap and a marijuana tee shirt during a great American tradition such as the Rose Bowl Game.
Others found it hilarious in it's outlandishness and moxie.
Erma Browbush 75 of Nogallies Texas said, "I just wish they'd make it legal, let people out of prison on weed charges and be done with the whole silly mess. I love it in my cookies but I don't think I should go to prison for it. It's asinine".
Well love it, or hate it, one Stanford student got his message across to an entire nation loud and clear this New Years day at the Rose Bowl.
