Slutty?

BILLINGSGATE POST - Forensic Etymologist, Dr. Billingsgate, in an interview seen on Face the Nation Sunday morning said that Rush Limbaugh should not apologize for calling Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut."

Citing no less an expert than Geoffrey Chaucer, known as the Father of the English language and widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages, Chaucer uses sluttish in reference to the appearance of a slovenly man in Canterbury Tales in the late 14th century. Perhaps Limbaugh himself might be described a slut under this meaning.

As for being ambiguous, consider these quotes:

"Our little girl Susan is a most admirable slut, and pleases us mightily. [Pepys, diary, Feb. 21, 1664]

Hearne, 1775: "nor was she a Woman of any beauty, but was a nasty Slut."

Shenstone, 1775: "She's ugly, she's old,...And a slut and a scold."

Although the modern accepted meaning is a sexually promiscuous woman or a woman of low or loose character, the adjective "slutty" carries a similar connotation, but can be applied both to people and to clothing and accessories, such as Halloween costumes.

On Face the Nation, Billingsgate also pointed out that "slut" is used as a slang term in the gay and bisexual communities and also with non-monogamous people. In usage taken from the book The Ethical Slut, the term has been used as an expression of choice to openly have multiple partners, and to revel in that choice.

Sometimes the word is used as a euphemism for bitch to describe a female dog.

I believe it is abundantly clear that no one, not even a law student at Georgetown, who claims to be able to look at the face of a fellow coed and determine whether she is anguishing about not being able to afford a contraceptive for a passionate roll in the hay, should be offended by being called a slut.

NOTE: The odds are that most of you, handicapped with sluttish reading habits, won't be offended by this article because you are word sluts through and through.

Make Dr. Billingsgate's day - give this story five thumbs-up (there's no need to register, the thumbs are just down there!)

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
