image for Isle of Wight News - Ventnor to increase parking charges
The car park in Shanklin has created extra spaces by letting people park on top of one another

The Pay and Display car park just off Zig Zag Street in Ventnor is to have it's parking charge raised from fifty pence an hour to sixty pence for fifty-two minutes. The other car parks are likely to follow suit.

"This will kill local trade," said local trader, Shep Cooper, owner of Cooper's Barrels of Laughs opposite the pay and display car park. "Why would people pay this extra charge when they can pop down the road to Shanklin and park for just over twice as long for four fifths as much?"

The Zig Zag Street car park is a favourite of visitors to the colourful seaside town due to the young people's art work on the car park wall that changes monthly. Carl Parker, councillor in charge of parks and parking on the island defends the increase.

"We've not had a parking charge in crease in Ventnor since the Parking Riots of ninety-six," he said. "We were forced into introducing the tariff back then to quell the unrest. This new charge is to fund the repair costs to the parking metres and to cover the cost of painting over the graffiti on the wall."

Stuart 'Super Whip' Piddle has been running his ice cream, candy floss, hot dog, coffee and single cigarettes van from the car park for twenty years.

"This is going to hit my bottomed lined hard," he said. "I have to pay parking just like every else's body. I did have an overstanding with the previous parkie warding, but old Jim died of emphysema last winter, and the new parkie warding is a non-smoker, so I can't bribe him. I can seize there's going to be trouble."

Despite misgivings, the new parking fee structure comes into force next month.
