image for Man 'with cucumber strapped to leg' arrested in Watford 'bomb' siege
New weapon of choice was seized by cops today

Watford - Terrified bank customers dialled 999 this morning amid fears a 12-inch cucumber strapped to a man's leg was 'an improvised explosive device'.

Police were taking no chances amid FO advice that the deadly vegetable is being used by Al Qaeda operatives to threaten salad lovers everywhere.

A police security cordon was thrown around the Watford branch of The First Gravytrain Bank for International Settlements as cops pounced to arrest the suspect.

The unnamed male, said to have terrorised bank workers and customers for over two hours, was eventually cuffed by specialist officers from the Met's Vegan Crimes Unit.

Bomb Squad operatives from the Biological Weapons Control Directorate are standing by to carry out a controlled explosion on the foot-long vegetable.

An update is expected to follow shortly.
