Councils all over the UK have been warned that the swingeing cuts they will have to make over the coming years will affect the quality of catering they provide at training courses.

Chief Executive of Lambeth Council, Seth Goldstein, announced that the first thing under threat would be the traditional cheese and pickle roll that has always been a firm favourite with trainees.

"Despite the expectation that attendance levels at future training courses will be severely affected by such a measure, we have no alternative in the current economic climate but to stop using pickles on the filled rolls we provide.

"The cheaper tomato ketchup or sliced beetroot options are the way ahead.

"We would be derelict in our duty if we didn't make every effort to save money where we can.

"But that is not to say that, if the economic climate improves in the future, we would not seriously consider reinstating our trademark filling.

"We are not monsters".
