Sarah Brown, wife of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, has revealed an encounter with Prince Andrew, which caused the Duke of York to march up a hill and down again.
Knowing of Andrew's interest in history, Sarah Brown showed him a wax mask of Oliver Cromwell, the man who helped to behead Andrew's ancestor Charles I.
'Oh dear' said Andrew 'I don't feel well. My head is reeling. I feel like that character in Harry Potter whose head is only attached to the rest of his body by a fine piece of nerve tissue.'
Sarah Brown, realising she had put her foot into the Royal Protocol, apologised for her indiscretion.
'Not at all' exclaimed the Duke of York 'if it is history we should face up to it. I think the wax image of your husband is incredibly accurate.'
Sarah, relieved to think that the myopic Prince could mistake Oliver Cromwell for her dear Gordon, comforted the Prince saying: 'Gordon can give people a nasty turn - I'm so sorry I put you through the experience.'
'Think nothing of it' the gallant Prince replied 'you have got to look like that if you are going to control a Cabinet. I always admired the way your husband maintained order within his own team. I know the Queen was always impressed. In fact she was certain he learnt how to control his staff after seeing her deal with Philip and Charles.'
