image for Autumn's winter baby puts spring in step of Royal Glums.

[INSIDE THE BIRTHING ROOM - BUCKINGHAM PALACE]

Phew! That was almost the year that was. After the bad-hat fiasco would there be anything that could put a smile on the Royal Glums?

Well thanks to the colonies - C-eh-N-eh-D-eh to be exact, QE2 and the rest of the Royal Glums are actually smiling. HM we are told is "delighted" with the birth of her first great-grandchild.

The 8lbs. 8 oz. baby girl was born to Peter Phillips (oldest Royal grand-son) and his Canadian wife Autumn Kelly. The wee one has supposedly even succeeded in cracking the usually permanently-fixed scowl on Grandma Princess Royal.

The unnamed baby girl is 12th in line to the throne.

150 yr-old Royalist and avid monarchy supporter, Freddy Fidgetfinger of St. Johns, New Newfoundland - a Crimean War veteran - warbled out a one-legged jiggy song of congratulations:

"Go on by! How she doin' me old trout!
I's the b'y that builds the boat
And I's the b'y that sails her
I's the b'y that catches the fish
And brings them home to Liza."

As they say in dese here parts - No doot aboot it...Everybody needs a spot o' cheer so ... Cheers!
