Police e-fit-up of the suspects

London - (Smoke 'n' Mirrors): Was a Mediterranean-looking couple hunted in the Gareth Williams death probe 'disguised with clever latex masks'?

A police e-fit issued this week shows a heavily camouflaged KGB pair who were caught on CCTV.

To all intents and purposes they appear to be a good-looking young man and woman.

But underneath all that expensive facial subterfuge lies a top Putin hit squad.

"The couple must have known the dangers of surveillance," the Met's head of counter-psychobabble explained today.

"Most likely it was a pair of cross-dressing men parading themselves as bona fide heteros."

Williams may have been preparing to go undercover himself as police released details of women's clothing found in his apartment.

His naked body was found in August, trussed up in a sports holdall 'ready for shipment' on a scheduled Aeroflop flight to Bloodyvostock.

KGB spookette Anya Kushchenko is 69.
