Suspicion surrounds the death of Paul the Octopus. Although Paul had exceeded the natural life span for an octopus (around two years) a well placed management contact at the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen where Paul lived has leaked details of an internal enquiry which has been launched following the discovery of emails on a staff member's PC at the centre.

Apparently these strongly suggest that an Asian betting syndicate had paid for Paul to be killed in the expectation that he would be transported to Hong Kong to be cooked and eaten by members of the syndicate to help them acquire some of Paul's betting selection skills.

As this is a part of the world where all manner of powdered animal parts are thought to have healing and other qualities, this outcome will not come as a surprise to some but will shock Paul's many admirers.
