Hollywood fever gripped the Island yesterday when Johnny Depp was reported to be visiting Alum Park and the Needles.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star was said to have been seen around lunch time with his French pop singer wife Vanessa Paradis, prompting hundreds of islanders to gather to catch a glimpse.
Brian Strewth said: "Someone in the pub said Johnny was looking at the Needles so I dashed over there as soon as I heard. I must have been too late because he wasn't there by the time arrived."
Another disappointed fan was Deidre St Petersburg: "I was so sorry I missed Johnny. I would have loved to get his autograph."
The Ryde and Newport Bugle sent a reporter and photographer, but as editor Phil "Scoop" Credible told us: "Our lads couldn't find him, or anyone who had actually seen him. One of the keepers at Alum Park told us he didn't know what all the fuss was about."
A spokesman for Mr Depp said as far as new knew the star was at home preparing for his next film.
