There were scenes of panic across London yesterday after a disc jockey working for the city's Capital Radio accidentally played "Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody" 4 months early.
Motorists on their way to work, thinking it was already the Christmas season, made dangerous U turns and headed for Oxford Circus to buy the presents they'd forgotten to buy. Shopworkers frantically started putting up bright coloured decorations and the King of Norway apologised to the Queen for forgetting to send Britain its annual Christmas tree.
Even celebrities were taken in by the mistake. Singers Cliff Richard and Paul McCartney were seen speeding towards their music studios to record what they hoped will be Christmas Number One hits and politicians made their way to Heathrow Airport to get away from what they expected would be a cold holiday season. The Queen started writing her Christmas Day message and council gritting lorries were out and about spraying sand in motorists' faces.
London slowly ground to a halt.
Five minutes later, someone looked at his watch, saw that it was still August and rung the radio station, which issued an apology.
