Delegates at the annual Liberal Democrat party conference in Bournemouth were stunned into silence earlier today when party leader Nick Clegg made the wild assertion that he would become the next Prime Minister of Great Britain.
Minutes later, however, all returned to normal as Clegg's error was clarified.
Mr Clegg, who had become quite animated, told listeners:
"I am to be Britain's next Prime Minister!"
His speech notes, however, penned by someone else, read:
"I aim to be Britain's next Prime Minister!"
Readers will note the subtle difference in these two versions. Mr Clegg, despite being a charismatic leader with an admirable energy and enthusiasm for politics, is far more likely to become the next manager of Manchester United than the next Prime Minister.
Although several party members had to be treated for shock after Mr Clegg's gaffe, the vast majority were unaffected as they were sleeping at the time.
