Today, numerologists will have noticed that the time and date at one point was 09:09 09/09/09. After an appeal for people affected by this, we received details from a Mr Neil McBride from Dunfermline near Edinburgh in Scotland. He told us he had been driving along the A909 at precisely 09:09 this morning.
"I looked at the clock in my car and realised it was 09:08," he told us, "and then it went over to 09:09. I realised I was driving down the A909, and the odometer on my dashboard showed 0009090!"
This wasn't the end of the 'oh-nine' coincidences for Mr McBride. "Today also happens to be my ninth wedding anniversary and my new mobile phone number ends in 0909."
Mr McBride decided that the fates were trying to tell him something and decided to do something about it. "I was actually on my way to play golf at the Dora club at Cowdenheath, and I know the course well. The ninth hole is a short par 3 and several times in the past I've come close to the pin with my tee shot."
With this in mind, he took a detour to a nearby bookie's to put a bet on getting a hole-in-one on the ninth. It took them a while to decide, but eventually they gave him odds of a hundred to one on a £900 bet.
The betting shop also insisted on sending a member of staff, Mitch Green, to oversee the attempt. He takes up the story. "When we set out from the clubhouse, Neil was doing well. He birdied a couple of holes and was pretty much on par by the time he played the ninth."
So, we asked, did he get a hole-in-one on the Ninth green on the 9th of the 9th, 2009 and win the £90,000?"
"Well no," Mitch said, "he holed out in a rather disappointing nine."
