A shoe similar to the one PM Brown had thrown at him

UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, arrived in Iraq for a surprise visit today and was greeted by a large contingent of Iraqi press.

Following the shoe throwing incident that marred George W Bush's visit, Mr Brown was welcomed effusively, momentarily, then a hail of shoes was launched from the rear of the press scrum.

Some observers counted as many as 50 shoes being thrown at the PM. Mr Brown ducked and weaved accordingly however managed to catch a number of the leather missiles. Fortunately, minutes later he discovered that one of the shoes thrown was a perfect match for one shoe he had left behind on a previous trip when he prayed at a local mosque.

Mr Brown was very pleased that the incident had a pleasant outcome and welcomed the new voice of the press in Iraq. He promised that the UK government will send a consignment of new shoes to the country in the next six months.
