New Mayor for London Boris Johnson (70) has been under heavy pressure recently to honour his promise to scrap the London congestion charge as written in his manifesto and one of the key reasons for his victory over Kenny (the Red) Livingstone.
Finally Mr Johnson bowed to that pressure and announced tonight that the London congestion Charge will be scrapped with immediate effect.
Mr Johnson told the press conference that as he is a man of his word he could no longer dither therefore he had made a bold decision.
Mr Johnson also noted that feedback from local residents had been taken into account, feedback that had highlighted the unfairness and unpopularity of the £8 daily charge and the problems it was causing local traders.
After the main press conference Mr Johnson confirmed in a fringe meeting of well known supporters that as from next Monday he intends to introduce the new driver. passenger and pedestrian "Privilege Charge" at a cost of £10 per day. This, he said, is because it is a Privilege to drive through or walk about in London with all it's wonderful attractions.
The Mayor stated "Tourists get away lightly under the old C/Charge but this innovation will "encompass" them all."
It is anticipated the new charge should double the revenue of the old C/Charge.
Baroness Thatcher( 131) commented that Boris is the best Mayor since Dick Whittington.
