image for Minister to open Olympic Knitting Championships
The winning design from the last Knitting Championships

The Minister for Opus Dei, Ruth Kelly, will be opening the UK Olympic Knitting Championships later today.

Held every four years at venues throughout the world, it is the turn of the tiny hamlet of Stoke Boyler in Devon to host this prestigious event.

With over three countries taking part this year and upwards of fourteen entrants, the event looks set to be a fantastic gethering of some of the worlds most acclaimed knitters.

Representing Britain this year is Marjorie Cuqingfat, a youthful resident of the David Hamilton Home for the Bewildered in Penge. Marjorie started knitting back in the 1930's as a young lass using a cotton bobbin and nails. She is perhaps better knows as being the inspiration for the line in the Queen song 'I'm going slightly mad' where the late Freddie Mercury sang "...I'm knitting with one needle".

The championship organiser Reginald Molehusband III said:

"It looks set to be a great competition this year. I am delighted that the Minister has decided to open it. We are also expecting great media interest this year, including a horde of journalists from "Knitting Monthly", and we believe Al-Jazeera will be covering it extensively as well.

"We are expecting a sell-out crowd for the main event tomorrow at the "Pig and Slaughterhouse" pub in the centre of the town, and the landlord has reserved up to three spaces for the expected fleet of three LDV minibuses which will ferry the spectators from the area's various nursing homes. Please don't block access to the back doors of the minibuses with your cars.

"It's great to know that out of all the three countries taking part in this major competition, the UK is the one being asked to host it."
